How to prepare for the Type B psychotechnical test
The psychophysical aptitude certificate is mandatory before sitting the DGT exam. We explain what it is for, what it measures, how much it costs and how long it remains valid.
The Type B psychotechnical test explained
Before taking the DGT theoretical exam, you must obtain a psychophysical aptitude report issued by an accredited Driver Recognition Centre (Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores - CRC). It is not a driving test: it is a medical and psychological assessment certifying that you are fit to drive.
What it is for
The certificate verifies that you satisfy the physical and mental aptitude requirements to obtain a Spanish driving licence. Without it, you cannot submit your driving licence application or sit the exam.
What it evaluates
- Medical history and general health relevant to road safety,
- Visual perception and visual adaptation capability,
- Psychological aptitude, coordination, and reflex responses relevant to driving,
- Alcohol and substance screening affecting driving capabilities.
The certificate is personal and issued exclusively by an accredited CRC; it is not the same as a generic medical certificate.
Cost and validity duration
- Typical cost: between €30 and €50 (prices are unregulated; each private centre sets its fee).
- Validity: 90 calendar days from the date of issue to register your file with the DGT.
- Once registered with the DGT, the medical report remains valid throughout the active lifespan of your application file (up to 2 years between examination attempts).
What to bring to the centre
Bring your official ID (DNI, NIE or passport) and, if required by the centre, your DGT appointment or file reference details. Some centres take the photo directly on site; it is recommended to confirm ahead of your appointment.
Common pitfall: confusing the DGT fee with the psychotechnical test
The DGT 2.1 government fee (€94.05) covers the examination rights. The psychotechnical certificate is a separate expense paid directly to the medical CRC. The total cost of preparing independently (por libre) usually totals €144–€164, including the official fee, the medical exam, and (optionally) your preparation platform.
How to structure your study once you have the certificate
Once you clear your medical examination and your report is registered, concentrate fully on the theoretical preparation: timed mock exams, new regulation topics under RD 518/2026, and spaced repetition (SRS) of your mistakes. With an up-to-date question bank and structured revision, eliminating recurrent errors is the fastest path to passing on your very first attempt.
